ICANN Picks Firms to Manage 2 Sponsored TLDs

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — Two companies have been tapped to operate new sponsored top-level domains “.jobs” and “.travel.”

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said Friday it chose Employ Media LLC, a Cleveland-based company that will open the domain for companies in the employment and recruiting fields, and for any company that wants to publish job-related information.

The new .travel domain will be managed by New York’s Tralliance Corp. The registry will be open to travel and tourism associations, as well as tourism-related businesses such as cruise lines, amusement parks, hotels, and car-rental companies.

The agreements, both spanning 10 years, have been submitted to the ICANN Board for approval.

Both registry operators, which will be responsible for policies and procedures for their TLDs, vowed they would offer detailed WHOIS databases of registration information.

ICANN will receive $2 per domain name annually under terms of the agreements signed with each registry, and it will have the right to disapprove new registry services that are outside the scope of the original deals.

In October, ICANN announced it would move ahead with a proposal for ".post." ICANN later announced that it would also initiate commercial and technical negotiations with the proponents of ".mobi" for mobile services providers.

ICANN still has not decided the fate of “.xxx,” which could be initiated for online adult companies.
